Schileen’s Pub Westville, NJ
A friend told me about one of the best roast beef sandwiches she’s ever had and that was all I needed to hear.
WHO: The name Schileen’s is a combo of the husband-and-wife owner duo, Eileen and John Schillig, who opened their doors in 1995. A true family business, with all five of their children jumping in at the onset to help the restaurant succeed. A special shout out to the bartenders, Brittany and Kim, who made me feel like an instant regular.
WHERE: Schileen’s Pub is located in Westville, NJ. The restaurant is roomy, and the bar is the center of attention, even during lunchtime. They have daily food and drink specials and an excellent draft beer selection. The pairing of a frosty pint and savory comfort food can’t help but leave you remarkably content. I really got that hometown pub vibe—comfortable, friendly, inviting and perhaps most importantly, flat out GOOD.
WHAT: There is something to say about simple yet delicious food, and that’s what you can expect at Schileen’s. I knew I was getting the famous roast beef sandwich and I asked our bubbly bartenders for some other recommendations. They set me up for success (and a very full belly): the “Top of the Round” Roast Beef Sandwich, the Virginia Baked Ham Sandwich, Chili Fries and Crab Bites.
STAFF FAVES: The Roast Beef Sandwich comes on a super-soft kaiser roll and the meat is melt-in-your-mouth delicious. Topped with gooey cheese (I picked sharp provolone) and served with a side of au jus and horseradish. Brittany hooked me up with her favorite sauce, a mixture of horseradish and honey mustard, and when I tell you this sandwich was heavenly, that’s an understatement!
The chili is another fan favorite, so I picked the chili fries, not expecting anything too special, and was delighted to be wrong again. The thick-cut fries were perfectly seasoned and somehow stayed crisp underneath a hearty pile of their sweet and spicy chili. Drizzled with sour cream and topped with green onions and shreds of mixed cheese—you won’t be able to stop eating them.
I have a feeling the regulars at Schileen’s will be dining there for many years to come. Be sure to add it to your South Jersey pit stops and don’t pass up on the roast beef sandwich!
