Master Three Men’s Health Issues

Men are hardwired to work hard and provide for those around them. But, in doing so, sometimes it’s easy to ignore health issues. The simplest way to maintain your health is to see a primary care provider (family doctor or internist) regularly. With a few preventative measures, you’ll be running like a well-oiled machine.

1.Blood pressure

You can keep many health issues at bay simply by maintaining a healthy blood pressure, which is 120/80 or lower according to the American Heart Association. High blood pressure, also called hypertension, can lead to heart disease, stroke, artery damage and erectile dysfunction.

Keep your blood pressure at a healthy level through exercise. Here are some simple ways to add more movement to your day without spending hours in a gym:

• Take the stairs instead of the elevator

• Take a brisk walk with your dog

• Ditch the cart and walk the golf course.

2.Weight

Being overweight can be physically restrictive and take a toll on your body and health. Obesity is a known risk factor for heart disease, diabetes and even cancer; however, there are a number of ways to improve how you eat while keeping the calories low and the flavor high.

Fight midday cravings with smart snacks like hummus and fresh veggies or trail mix with pistachios, walnuts or almonds and dried fruit. The idea is to have two 200-calorie healthy snacks a day. By curbing your appetite with a delicious snack, you’ll take the edge off your hunger and this will help you keep portions in control at dinner.

3.Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer, the second most common cancer in men, is responsible for 25,000 deaths in the U.S. each year. While it is a serious illness, it is also treatable if caught early. Yearly exams with your primary care doctor are one of the best ways to identify prostate cancer. Based on your medical and family history, your doctor can advise the best screening method for you.

Has it been a while since your last primary care appointment? If so, call 1-888-847-8823, and an Access Navigator will schedule an appointment for you.
